Peter Wolf Apartment

Apartment of Peter Wolf, 122 Mount Auburn Street

Peter Wolf was a painter and musician who played in groups such as The Hallucinations and the J. Geils Band before branching out as a solo artist. As his apartment was just blocks from Club 47, Wolf invited performers to use the apartment rather than the cramped club dressing room between sets. Wolf’s friendship with Muddy Waters meant that the Wolf apartment also housed members of the Muddy Waters Blues Band when they played in the Cambridge area. Wolf hosted parties when Club 47 closed down for the night or was shut down by Cambridge police. With folk music at the heart, similar parties nationwide became known as hootenannies or “Hoots,” and Joan Baez once suggested that a hootenanny was to folk what jam sessions were to jazz. Indeed, a musical variety television show called Hootenanny aired on American television from 1963 to 1964 featuring mostly folk music performers
